7 - Exploration

Further Exploration - The future of Web Development

Description

For this Guide the students choose a subject according to their interests to research and work on individual projects under the guidance of an instructor. The main point of this project is to experiment with future technological innovations in web development.
The outcomes of the project are defined by the students themselves and then validated by the instructor.  A weekly status meeting with the instructor (3 in total) should be scheduled to discuss ideas and check on the progress of the work.
The structure of this process should be as follows:
  • Research Plan - the student creates a document like this that details what they would like to research and work on. This should be ready before the first status meeting (around 4 days)
  • Weekly status meetings - each meeting should be held before the end of each week. Agenda: talk about what has been done in the previous days, discuss issues and debate ideas and introduce the plan for the next week
  • Development - this is the main work, creating the product, paper or otherwise agreed on outcome
  • Feedback request - the work should be submitted for assessment using io.vefskoli.is, in order to obtain feedback from a peer. This should happen around the end of the third week, at the announced time. Note: the pass/no pass vote will be ignored.
  • Polishing - After getting a review from a peer, the student should finish off the work by polishing it and making it ready for the presentation
  • Presentation - The work will be presented at a Seminar. Details to be announced on Slack.
  • Evaluation  - The final grade for this project will be composed by
    • Research Plan (10%)
    • Status Meetings (10%)
    • Your Review Grade from io.vefskoli.is  (15%)
    • Presentation  (65%)

  • Choosing a research topic
  • Writing a research plan
  • Judging a source — who wrote it, when, and what they were selling
  • Emerging areas: AI-assisted development, new browser APIs, performance, edge and serverless
  • Building a demo to show what you learned

You can make a more theoretical project and write an article:
  • A research report must be created and published
Or you can do a project:
  • A demo must be created to showcase the research topic(s)
Or a blend of both…
returnables
  • link to research results article
  • link to demo application
  • Sharing session
